EXPERIENCE - EDUCATION
Antony Ploumidis deriving from a medical family, studied medicine at the Belgian University “Ecole Medical de l’ Universite de Lovanium” in Central Africa. He graduated with honors and was awarded first in his class. He received his PhD degree with excellence and continued his studies obtaining the Tropical Medicine degree. He trained as a general surgeon at the University Hospital «King Edward» in Durban, South Africa. As a registrar in general surgery, he participated in studies and research on parenteral nutrition, while his clinical work included extensive experience in abdominal trauma. In a time of great developments in the field of transplantations in South Africa, hedecided to pursue the urology specialty, with special interest in the field of kidney transplantations. Over the years he became in charge of the department of kidney transplantations at the «Addington» Hospital as well as the department of urology at the «RK Khan» Hospital. His teaching experience included lectures to students as well as the demonstration of open surgical techniques and endourology to residents. His visit to various centers abroad (Belgium, France, Great Britain) resulted in the exchange of ideas and techniques.
After a decade spent with his family in South Africa, he returned to Greece and in 1988 assumed director of the Urology department in "Athens Medical Center", a position that he holds to the present day. He is among the first Greek urologists who in 1992 acquired the title of «Fellow of the European Board of Urology» after examinations.
On October 2006, he carried out the first robotic nephrectomy in Greece at the Athens Medical Center. Since then he has performed a large number of robotic surgeries concerning both the upper (nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy, nephouretererectomy, pyeloplasty, pyelolithectomy) and lower (radical prostatectomy and cystectomy) urinary tract. He remains until today vice president of the Greek Scientific Society of Robotic Surgery (G.S.S.R.S.). He gives lectures and trains young urologists interested in robotic surgery in collaboration with the University of Athens and Intuitive (international workshop in Robotic Surgery in Southeastern Europe).He attends conferences and is continuously updated on robotic surgery collaborating with specialized centers in Europe.
