Dr. Nikolaou was born on the island of Ios in Cyclades Greece in 1949. After completing his secondary education in Anargyrios and Koorgialenios High School, he graduated from the Medical School of Kapodistrian Athens National University in 1975. He completed his residency at Orthopaedic Clinic of Athens University in February 1981 and in 1983 he earned his PhD from the University of Athens.
Following his residency, he moved to the United States for a year fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and two years in Orthopaedic Research, at the Orthopaedic Clinic of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina (1983-86).
Dr. Nikolaou’s research dates from 1979 with the highest honor in 1986 when he won the “O Donoghue” award from the American Orthopeadic Society of Sports Medicine for his innovative work in anterior cruciate ligament transplantation. In 1997 after many years of research in the physiology of muscular injuries, he was awarded the highest prize “Kappa Delta” of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He is a member of many Greek and international medical societies (EEXOT, EAE, AAOS, ESSKA, ISACOS, ICRS, Piedmont Orthopaedic Society, EFOST, ACL Study Group, ORS) and the author of numerous publications in both Greek and international medical journals and co-author in textbooks.
Dr. Nikolaou also enjoyed a great soccer career. He was a football (soccer) player of Atromitos F.C. from 1967 to 1970and AEK Football Club from 1971 to 1982 and a player of all Greek football National teams. A highlight in his football career was his participation in the UEFA European Final in 1980, in Italy. He was named twice “Athlete of the Year” in 1974 and 1979 from the Hellenic Sports Association.
He was the official doctor of the Greek National Football Team from 1987 up to 1994 and has been the doctor for AEK Football Club since 1987 to the present. For a period of six years he was also the Head doctor for Olympiakos football club ( 2003 to 2009).
He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Football Federation (E.P.O) and the President of the Health Committee of the Greek Football Federation (1994-1995). He was also the President of AEK Football Club (1997-98).
Since 1987 he has been working at the Athens Medical Center having created along with his colleagues an Orthopaedic Clinic with clinical focus in Sports Injuries.
DrPantelis Nikolaou is married with Eleni since 1974 and they have three children and five grandchildren.
